How much of your freight spend could you save?

Eight questions about how you buy transport: how much you spend, how many carriers you use, whether invoices are checked and when lanes were last tendered. See the likely savings range and where it sits.

How it works

The sums, in plain sight.

Each lever has a savings range that depends on your answers. Invoice checking: 2 to 4% of spend if nothing is checked, 1 to 2% if some is, close to nothing if all is. Fewer carriers: 2 to 5% where spend is spread across eight or more carriers, or under 60% sits with the top three; 1 to 2% with five to seven carriers. Tendering: 3 to 6% if lanes have not been tendered for three years or more, 2 to 4% after two to three years.

Spot moves: 5 to 15% on the spot share, where it is above 10% of spend. Surcharges: 25 to 50% of the extras above 8% of spend. The ranges are combined so that they do not double count.

These are Waterfront working ranges from our own experience, not published benchmarks. Freight audit providers often quote 2 to 10% of spend recoverable from invoice errors alone; we use lower figures. Your real savings depend on your lanes, volumes and the market when you tender.
